The Missing Blowout Preventer Switch [Today's News Poem, December 26, 2010]

The Missing Blowout Preventer Switch [Today's News Poem, December 26, 2010]

The buses are whining while winter is raining;
A mother is walking her daughter on Christmas.
They're hurrying, filling their hands with each other—
All washed with florescents and streetlamps and evening.
They're hurrying into a crevice of shadow.
A doorway, like others, with keys—like another's—
A sink to remove all the germs of the city,
A bed with the linens of peace and a playpen
Of toys; and a lingering presence—a haunting
Perhaps, or a memory. Maybe it's terror,
Or maybe it's sorrow—that smell has such power
I smell it while driving, with windows rolled up.
I reach for a button, a lever, a trigger
To vanquish the awfulness hovering over
Their heads... it's my head; and their halo my halo.
Their bed is my bed and their corners, my corners.
I'm so disconcerted—where is the button
To cease this disaster, stop this machinery?

"As the drilling team was trying to shut in the well, Paul Erickson, the chief mate on the Damon B. Bankston, a 262-foot work vessel moored to the Horizon, noticed something spilling off the rig. Then drilling fluids began cascading onto the ship. Dead seagulls fell, killed by the blowout’s blast. The Bankston’s captain radioed the Horizon’s bridge and was told to move to a safe distance.
In the engine control room, Doug Brown and his men overheard the conversation with the Bankston on their radios. Within arm’s reach was a console that gave them access to the emergency shutdown system. All they had to do was lift a plastic cover and hit a button and the engines would shut down in seconds. It was not such an easy or obvious step to take."

Silent Eon [Today's News Poem, August 22, 2010]

Silent Eon [Today's News Poem, August 22, 2010]

There is death by every element.
Pesticides by bomber gas the swarms:
Doomed as wheat to die as energy.
Engines vomit forth dioxin clouds.
Fuel transmutes to emulate the rain.

Falcons coast on thermal breeze to sway,
Crash and crumble, much as nested eggs.
Summer's nearly ended. Springtime still
Echoes: silent, past the solstice point,
Through the fecund summer—nearly done—

Into autumn; through the wintertime
Lasting longer than a contrail's line.

“New research confirms the existence of a huge plume of dispersed oil deep in the Gulf of Mexico and suggests that it has not broken down rapidly, raising the possibility that it might pose a threat to wildlife for months or even years. ”

Plankton Bloom [Today's News Poem, June 30, 2010]

Plankton Bloom [Today's News Poem, June 30, 2010]

Earnings are sport; just a game on the screen.
Wealth is the score and the players are meat.
Markets determine the price of a bean,
Residue running from acre to ocean;
Where plankton will bloom
And choke out the fish:
An oily wound plumes
In petri gulf dish.

Drunken suspenders are typing by dark,
Networks of millions are trading their points;
Feeding the creatures that dine on the spark
Arbitrage sends in a wire through computers—
With cables for nerves
And motorized arms,
A camera eye serves
To watch as we farm.

“By 10am it emerged that Mr Perkins had single-handedly moved the global price of oil to an eight-month high during a "drunken blackout". Prices leapt by more than $1.50 a barrel in under half an hour at around 2am – the kind of sharp swing caused by events of geo-political significance. Ten times the usual volume of futures contracts changed hands in just one hour... The FSA will consider re-approving him as a broker after the ban, if he has recovered from his alcohol problem, but noted "Mr Perkins poses an extreme risk to the market when drunk".”

BP Escape Boat [Today's News Poem, June 19, 2010]

BP Escape Boat [Today's News Poem, June 19, 2010]

We worship the sun and the water as sources
Of life—and they're true to their purpose: refreshing
The lungs that have carried an ozone from office
To races, where fiberglass timbers are chipping
The teeth of the current. The ritual sailors,
Those actor-explorers are winding the island,
Enacting the glories of promising eras
That vanished—depleted with passage. They're chasing
Horizons in search of a past that is littered
With folly. While under the surface, the present
Is leaking and follows the vessel; which dashes
On moats made of petrol, from castles of ashes.

“BP officials on Saturday scrambled yet again to respond to another public relations challenge when their embattled chief executive, Tony Hayward, spent the day off the coast of England watching his yacht compete in one of the world’s largest races.”

Egg of Knowledge [Today's News Poem, June 2, 2010]

Egg of Knowledge [Today's News Poem, June 2, 2010]

My proboscis is thirsty. It punctures the surface
Of the wonderful host. And the taste is delicious.
And success is now failure. What once was obsession
And delusion, has taught me to manage the damage
My destructively ravenous hunger has written
On the planet. The recipe calls for a cauldron—
And an ocean will work—and one heats up the surface,
And one bakes it in gasses. The tide is the message
And the script is of salt and the oil that is leaking.
I am drinking what's left of the host and the knowledge
Of the harvest is filling my beak and my body
Can contain what was left and unknown in that shallow
And too delicate cradle: an egg we have eaten.

“The latest attempt to contain the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico hit a snag Wednesday when a diamond-studded saw operated by an underwater robot got stuck in the riser pipe it was intended to slice off, federal officials said.”

The Home Stretch [Twitter Found Poem, May 30, 2010]

The Home Stretch [Twitter Found Poem, May 30, 2010]
Tweets+Edits=#twitterfoundpoem

Wave that green flag again!
4 WIDE down the front stretch
Dario, Helio, Briscoe, bus...
i hate when a bus goes too fast. like
102 mph and falls into a ditch.

the tank explodes. 30 passengers, including 10 children
burn to death. Wouldn't they build a tank anticipating that #nascar
might be shooting at it? anticipating that oil spill nightmare! ?

The Memorial Day Weekend is dedicated to remembering
passengers... including children
who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for this
wonderful....DANGEROUS so called life
so our fear and hate country could be what it is today:
a bursting mortar shell.

SWAT the Revolutionary Dolphin Turtle [Twitter Found Poem, May 13, 2010]

SWAT the Revolutionary Dolphin Turtle [Twitter Found Poem, May 13, 2010]
Tweets+Edits= #twitterfoundpoem

Solution for oil spill and leak. Set it ON FIRE.
an eternally burning oil fire.
use the swat team: Outnumbered but never outgunned.
they are adorable even though
they are barely picking up everyones trash...

the swat team turned from the fire
cus there's a bank robber in the bushes.
Like 20 SWAT members have automatic weapons
pointed on one Dolphin turtle bank robber.

You can jail a Revolutionary Dolphin turtle
but you can't jail the Revolution.
black guy deaths are Nothing.
Revolutionary Dolphin turtle deaths
are less than Nothing.
You can gun down a Revolutionary Dolphin turtle
in Richmond near the oil refinery buyin some CRACK.
You can Set it ON FIRE
because a Revolutionary Dolphin turtle
Has no friends
no ATTORNEY
no black panthers to keep fighting for them.
SWAT doesn't hate Revolutionary Dolphin turtle
as people. they hate them as reptiles.

Burn the Gulf [Twitter Found Poem, May 12, 2010]

Burn the Gulf [Twitter Found Poem, May 12, 2010]

All those animals polluting our oil...
You Don't Realize How Dependent You Are On
animals Until they Are gone...
oh well, at least i have Yummy pepper spray
in case @GaryJBusey gets frisky.

Technology Is nearly Gone...
Because of the oil sploosh
some folks are bound to contemplate the true cost
of plant dependency, right? RIGHT?
Because of the oil sploosh,
Because Technology Is nearly Gone...
i have to cook @GaryJBusey in the gulf
oil spill and Burn the gulf
to get whatever i need.

I'm so Dependent On pepper spray
and i get into all kinds of naughty trouble today
and animals and Technology Is nearly Gone...
i'll make a hybrid electric plant
made out of All those leftover animals
to get whatever i need.
i won't contemplate the true cost of dependency.
I hope it should fix itself up tomorrow!

A New Treasure Isle [Today's News Poem, May 10, 2010]

A New Treasure Isle [Today's News Poem, May 10, 2010]

Sanitize leftovers, place me in bins.
Ripening refuse may travel beyond
Sirens in mourning. The harrowing din
Stresses the senses; the engines respond—

Salvaging trinkets—emitting the sound
Rescues create. The remainder is bagged,
Shipped in containers and sold by the pound.
Cauterize wounds with the garbage we dragged

Out of our houses and into the seas;
Choking the poison with sanitized piles.
Vomited litter: the corpses of trees
Join with the rancid, to form a new isle.

“Ms. Crowley has long hair, a ruddy outdoor complexion, and a sincere manner. She wants to sail west in the next month or two, out to what is called the North Pacific Trash Gyre. Her goal is to start cleaning up the plastic trash that has leaped into social consciousness over the past couple of years. ”
