Horror Show [Today's News Poem, May 1, 2010]

“The incident in New York City's Times Square that began with a suspicious vehicle appears to have developed into a real threat from a fire bomb, according to one official account. Part of New York City's Times Square area was evacuated Saturday, May 1, after a suspicious vehicle was found there on fire. All reports indicate the vehicle contained gasoline, propane and possibly gun powder. Incindiary devices are not explosive devices, but are lethal.”

“It's the first time that the character of Krueger, not just his actions, has been legitimately disturbing and that's mainly because of what Bayer and company show us of pre-burn Freddy. You're not quite sure if he's just a soft-spoken, simpleton gardener with innocent intentions or whether that southern twang, sweet tea approach is Freddy Krueger's actual mask. That's not just creepy, that's bothersome. Those are real-world issues.”

A Yankee Doodle murder fest
For those who fear explosive vests.
A trip to Wal-Mart gets it done
Just strip the powder from your gun's
Supply of ammo; pump some gas
And steal a car—you're there with class.

The movie ends on climax notes.
We never see the hero's motes
Of sorrow poison him with guilt
Nor see his righteous anger wilt
Beyond the credits—nor his shame
As friends despise the killer's name.

Entrepreneurs have always been
America's domain of win.
We grew the market for the car,
Computers—why not also star
As action heroes in a war?
For what's a little righteous gore,

When Ted Kaczynski earned his fame
By bombing labs, to much acclaim?
Who makes a movie starring shlubs
Who drive the cabs or tend the pubs?
The start-up costs are dear it's true;
But movie stars must first debut.
