Annihilism [Today's News Poem, September 29, 2010]

Annihilism [Today's News Poem, September 29, 2010]

With leftover organs, Destroyer had molded
A paragon: fingers for checking the pulse;
A head with a basket of spittle—and scolded
By sonar; the echolocation of targets.

A heat seeker, drawn to the warmth and the flutter
Of cells through the arteries. Everything preys
Itself with a tongue full of theft as we sputter...
No! Trundle through appetites, leaving us lonely.

I offer the Maker my hands; for the favor
Of penance. While measuring hamburger meat
I thought of my muscles at play—how I savor
The feats of my body with proteins I've salvaged

From aisles in the market where death is a venture
That's pared from a carcass, to slab—through a grind;
Established by pattern. Inverted. Indenture
Yourself to regret, disappointment: the horror

of self.

“Four soldiers from the Fort Hood Army base in Texas -- all decorated veterans from the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan -- died in the past week, a Fort Hood spokesman said Wednesday.
In all four cases, it appears the soldiers took their own lives, spokesman Christopher Haug said.”
