Pronounced Model Land
Misti Rainwater-Lites
Tyra Banks, fairy godpimp
to many a wannabe Gisele Bunchen,
is a literary genius, poised to take
the world by storm with Modelland.
In Modelland the boys and girls
shit strawberry fat free ice cream
and there is no unrequited love
or mediocre hair days. Everyone
is, like, totally hot and all the skyscrapers
are mirrored and the cotton candy clouds
only rain confetti and lingerie.
Choo choo. All aboard for Modelland.
Make me a believer, make this size fourteen
Texas baby mama believe
that such a place exists
and there is room at the inn for me.

The Crushing Gravity of the Situation [Twitter Found Poem, May 11, 2010]
Tweets+Edits= #twitterfoundpoem
boredd ?! evil ?!
mock your dreams & aspirations...
ppl who know the least argue the most
For example
my office crush is influenced by the object of said crush
I think the effect of fact is finite.
it is proportional to the strength of the lie.
the gravity of the object of said crush
is finite, but my delusion is infinite ?!
I can't believe I don't know why
I'm boredd ... why I have dreams & aspirations.
I don't know why gravity is finite
but boredd is infinite...
What's the matter?
If ur ex tries 2 hurt ur feelings by exploding
in a mushroom cloud,
If people laugh and mock at your dreams & aspirations,
just think about the crush of gravity.
FIGHT!!! laugh!!! flaughing
at the mushroom cloud in us all
takes the proportional strength & evil
of Murdoch & Huffington!
the gravity of my delusion is infinite!!!

COST ANALYSIS [Repost of May 10, 2010 Guest News Poem, by Jeff Chon]
COST ANALYSIS [Guest News Poem, May 10, 2010]
Jeff Chon
How would you feel if I told
you it costs the company
six hundred dollars a week
to walk with my red vest and
PDT holstered, to pace
across scuffed linoleum,
with thirty two watts of
fluorescent tubing washing
my skin a starchy gray, with
Careless Whisper piping through
the speakers, to chase you through
sliding doors, the parking lot,
to tackle you, restrain you,
choke you out, my keys jangling,
huffing and puffing over
a five buck tube of toothpaste?

Getting Evil Eyes From Watching Superhot Blood Plasma TV [Bonus Twitter Found Poem, May 10, 2010]
Tweets+Edits= #twitterfoundpoem
Every now and then I am struck by the utter malice
and peril inherent to modernity.
Curious fact: I must have replaced my superhot blood plasma
with an extraordinary power from a supernatural source.
Must mean I'm TV soluble.
something seems to cast a spell or influence
over my eye. loving the idea of a hole being drilled in my eye.
Surgery on my eye to drain the infection
from a supernatural source.
don't say the evil eye is the supernatural source.
I'm TV soluble.
I must have replaced myself
with someone else and now
I CAN'T GET ENOUGH TV .

Tribute of Rust for the Sea [Bonus Poem May 10, 2010]
Tribute of Rust for the Sea [Bonus Poem May 10, 2010]
To the one who offers himself
To the fog with faithless devotion:
The hillside rejects you—the air
Does not want you. Linger alone
If you must, but riptides deny you.
The nighttime is rotten enough.
With the crusts of light from the shards
That are scattered: city in evening
Reflecting the halo of light
Off the moisture-crown in the sky...
And I hover! Somehow the west wind
Promotes me, uplifting me next
To the towers. Signal projects
Me, connecting pebbles—the dwellings—
In mist, and I rust to protect
This lost empire: sand and wave swelling.

A New Treasure Isle [Today's News Poem, May 10, 2010]
A New Treasure Isle [Today's News Poem, May 10, 2010]
Sanitize leftovers, place me in bins.
Ripening refuse may travel beyond
Sirens in mourning. The harrowing din
Stresses the senses; the engines respond—
Salvaging trinkets—emitting the sound
Rescues create. The remainder is bagged,
Shipped in containers and sold by the pound.
Cauterize wounds with the garbage we dragged
Out of our houses and into the seas;
Choking the poison with sanitized piles.
Vomited litter: the corpses of trees
Join with the rancid, to form a new isle.
“Ms. Crowley has long hair, a ruddy outdoor complexion, and a sincere manner. She wants to sail west in the next month or two, out to what is called the North Pacific Trash Gyre. Her goal is to start cleaning up the plastic trash that has leaped into social consciousness over the past couple of years. ”

http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2010/0510/A-passion-to-clean-up-the-Pacific-Ocean-s-great-garbage-patch
“Engineers are examining whether they can close a failed blowout preventer by stuffing it with trash, said Adm. Thad Allen, the commandant of the Coast Guard.”

Harmonic Divergence [Today's News Poem, May 9, 2010]
Harmonic Divergence [Today's News Poem, May 9, 2010]
The shadows exposed to the halogen lighting
Dissolve into streetcars. Together they're praying;
Emitting transcendence: electrical wiring
And ships in the darkness are chanting the mantra
Of faith in the hallows of vascular pathways.
Deliver my shuttle of cargo to surface
And elevate passengers higher and higher
To space if you can—for beyond the top office
Our faith must ascend. If nothing can catch it
I'll stretch in the nothingness, spreading my darkness
Where voids once prevailed and then Jupiter likewise
Will kneel to the 'om' of harmonic convergence
With Heaven and stars—both accompany—singing.
–
“Neanderthals mated with some modern humans after all and left their imprint in the human genome, a team of biologists has reported in the first detailed analysis of the Neanderthal genetic sequence.”
– Nicholas Wade, The New York Times, May 6, 2010
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/07/science/07neanderthal.html
“The European Central Bank, in an aggressive move announced after European governments unveiled their latest response to a spreading sovereign-debt crisis, said it will buy European government and private bonds "to ensure depth and liquidity in those markets which are dysfunctional."”
– JON HILSENRATH, NINA KOEPPEN And BRIAN BLACKSTONE, The Wall Street Journal, MAY 9, 2010, 11:47 P.M. ET

It’s not the work which kills Owl City
It’s the forest dome.

Elements of Attraction [Today's News Poem, May 8, 2010]
Elements of Attraction [Today's News Poem, May 8, 2010]
Awakening Gaia—who slumbers in magma,
Recoiling from birth even now, in the churning
Of iron—intelligence flickers in magnets.
We creep and we fly through the dreams of our hostess.
She's muttering curses. We're misapprehending
The message of burning. The ashes may flutter
And scorch what's not smothered; a gusher in oceans
Ignites on the surface and swims with the currents;
The coal in the seams in the mines is a shadow
Of flames ever spinning and reeling from natal
Exertions. She lusts for the Sun and she pities
Near Luna—it's old and depleted and barren.
The Sun is much finer: alone in the darkness
The system surrounds it, enthralled with attraction.
“British air passengers faced more misery on Saturday as a volcanic ash cloud from Iceland continued to disrupt European flight schedules. ”
– BBC, 22:53 GMT, Saturday, 8 May 2010 23:53 UK
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8670339.stm
“Gulf fishery managers are bracing for the arrival of oil gushing from a ruptured undersea wellhead off Louisiana's coast since April 20, when the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig under contract with BP Plc exploded. The blast killed 11 crew members, sank the rig and unleashed a spill that could eclipse the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska.”
– Steve Gorman, Reuters, Sat May 8, 2010 1:07am EDT
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6470GI20100508?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews
“Four hours after an explosion killed at least eight people in Russia's largest coal mine, Raspadskaya, another blast rocked the West Siberian mine, a source in the mine's administration said on Sunday. "The blast took place at about 1:00 a.m. Moscow time," the source said without elaborating. The information is yet to be officially confirmed.”

Fighting Monsters. Becoming Monsters. [Today's News Poem, May 7, 2010]

A phantom on edges of murders. He's swollen
With mucus. Denial's the game for explorers
On frontiers of progress. He carries syringes
For ambushes; stalking his quarry with kindness.
He whispers confession as life on the fringes
Is chucked in the dumpster, succumbing to blindness.
His code is of sorrow. He lives as a martyr;
Excising the pedophiles, tricking the tricksters—
The suitcase is filled with explosives to slaughter
The criminals: gangsters and business suit slicksters.
His code—if he has one—destroy the destroyers
Of innocence. Monsters adopt the survivors,
And care for the fry—for they share an employer:
The miserable cycle is history's driver.
“Huff, 42, was killed Monday while responding to a call about gunshots in a vacant home on the 20200 block of Schoenherr in Detroit. Four other officers were injured... Petersen said. "Even people who have no ties to the police, still, it's like they lost part of their fatherhood and protection..." Huff is survived by his wife, Melissa, and a 10-year-old son, Blair. ”

“When Faisal Shahzad took his oath of citizenship a year ago, swearing to “support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies,” he seemed the model of a legal immigrant success story. Moving from one coveted visa to the next over a decade, he had acquired an M.B.A., a decent job, a wife and two children and a fine suburban home.”

Instruments of Distraction [Today's News Poem (Sonnet) May 6, 2010]
Instruments of Distraction [Today's News Poem (Sonnet) May 6, 2010]
The politicians claim, biologists
Agree, the fit survive, the rest compete
For dignity. Or ask economists
About your state of mind: you die complete
When healthcare's tapped and zeroed out. Your grave's
Not covered. Pay the out of pocket cost.
Depression's just a state of mind—who saves
When every instant offers something lost?
Tomorrow cannot compensate today,
Nor later, now. The coffee's instant brew,
Remote is by the keyboard, where I play
My instrument's distraction; seeking new
Obsessions–watching monitors for clues,
For purpose: in the instants, I must choose.
“Layoffs have dropped back to pre-recession levels and employers have slowly resumed hiring as the economy recovers from the worst recession since the 1930s. ”

Dinner and a Movie [Today's News Poem (Sonnet), May 5, 2010]
Dinner and a Movie [Today's News Poem (Sonnet), May 5, 2010]
Amok in orbit, chatter bounces back
From whence it came. A galaxy of trash
On television—spewing meme attack—
Receives the signal-nonsense: systems crash,
Reflecting tins of din for dogs and cats...
A mother's giving birth behind a drape...
A starving baby needs your cash—you're fat
Besides... the first ten callers may escape
To Maui... Save yourself to save the world
They say. Who needs the bother? Save your cash
Instead and pray that Ancient Ones unfurled
Their solar sails to take you under lash,
Instead of glass on plate—or worse, just raw—
While teevee shows display. They'll watch with awe.
“Galaxy 15 could threaten nearby satellites because its communications package is stuck on and it may start interfering with its neighbors by siphoning off their signals. It's the first time such an event has ever occurred, and it sent Orbital Sciences, the satellite's builder, on a dash to figure out how to stop the satellite-run-amok.”
– Clara Moskowitz, 6:05 p.m. PT, Tues., May 4, 2010
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36919374/ns/technology_and_science-space/
“Hawking’s logic on aliens is, for him, unusually simple. The universe, he points out, has 100 billion galaxies, each containing hundreds of millions of stars. In such a big place, Earth is unlikely to be the only planet where life has evolved... “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.””

Magic 8 ball, The loud mouth in the crew,
says I have a fear of flying.
I love speaking to the pragmatics
about my only vice: fear! Lol!
I was told that I'm the nicest guy they ever talked to
I d0n't like meat
I love math,
I d0n't like the truth...
I love the messy, emotional drunk.
take advantage of that.
voice your opinion.
be careful: a vegetarian is the best
serial killer of all !
So true! #Dontbescared of the loud mouth in the crew.
they say the quiet ones are worse!!!
u WANT ME TO FOLLOW YOU?
Be careful what you ask for!!!
There are Night's stalkers about you (k)now!
A Good Night's Sleep Saves You From an Early Grave
BUT a messy, emotional drunk
is perfect for the Grim Sleeper.
A Good Night's Sleep Saves You From an Early
new life.
I love to Fight for me
and stay quiet... stay strong .
I take advantage of that.

The Ghosts of Banquo and Icarus [Today's News Poem May 4, 2010]
The Ghosts of Banquo and Icarus [Today's News Poem May 4, 2010]
Floes adrift on lava float away on molten
Clay and grind their teeth together; loosening, then
Crumbling the brittle igneous to boulders,
Else to rifts and canyons. Poles align to colder
Regions, warmer climes, then back again. It shudders;
Vomits rock and ash so hot the vessel's rudders
Fail. The oceans boil the krill. The storks are trailing
Embers, losing feathers, melting skin and wailing.
Splash! The potion's seasoned. Princes feed, while rulers
Sleep in beds of sand and wait for something crueler.
“A tumble in global stocks spread to Asia on Wednesday on heightening fears that Greece's debt woes could spread to other countries.”

“Every so often, movements deep within the iron core of the Earth mean that the planet flips its magnetic field; south becomes north and north becomes south. The last reversal was 780,000 years ago, and there are signs that another could be on the way soon. "The strength of the Earth's magnetic field has decreased by nearly eight per cent in the last 150 years," says Nils Olsen of Denmark's National Space Institute. "In some regions it has decreased by 10 per cent in just 20 years."”

Graveyard Launch to Heaven [Today's News Poem (Sonnet), May 3, 2010]
Graveyard Launch to Heaven [Today's News Poem (Sonnet), May 3, 2010]
“The superweeds could temper American agriculture’s enthusiasm for some genetically modified crops. Soybeans, corn and cotton that are engineered to survive spraying with Roundup have become standard in American fields. However, if Roundup doesn’t kill the weeds, farmers have little incentive to spend the extra money for the special seeds.”
– William Neuman and Andrew Pollack, The New York Times, May 3, 2010
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/04/business/energy-environment/04weed.html?hpw
The rats will feast on scraps—they'll lick their snouts;
And cats in turn will dine on rodent meat.
Yet both combine their gristle; ground about
In vats, encased as sausages we eat.
We've solved the puzzle-knot of roots with saws
We pulled from stones. A prophecy declared
A greater beast—not red in tooth and claw;
But rather just a midwife who's prepared
To cut the prize away from dying wombs.
The buffalo is white—she's made of bone
And frolics near the graves. The moon's in bloom.
The ragweed, squirrels and dogs collect near stones
That mark the victory of cunning weeds
That chase the moon with fuel the mother bleeds.

Brinksmen Fear the Nightstalkers [Today's News Poem, May 2, 2010]
Brinksmen Fear the Nightstalkers [Today's News Poem, May 2, 2010]
“A global nuclear conference that opens Monday is shaping up as a showdown between Iran and the United States, with each side jockeying for allies in the escalating dispute over the Islamic republic's nuclear program.”
– Mary Beth Sheridan and Colum Lynch, The Washington Post, Monday, May 3, 2010 edition; May 2, 2010
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/02/AR2010050203144.html
Yes, each of us makes his own way through the gutter
Evading the searchlight that scans through the night time:
We're stalking and weaving through hedges and gardens
Until we are caught by the beam—then we sputter
“This game is not fair.” Do we know it's to war prime
The boys of the city, whose fathers must harden
Their lambs into rams so the angels pass over
Their doors—to delay the last rest in the clover?
And later we jump off the buildings and fences
Each daring the others to jump ever higher.
Defeating the terror of gangs or pursuers—
We rattled ourselves to control our fear senses.
The brothers would mock my delays—I'm the crier.
We judged both the others, as pre-teen reviewers.
My best friend was Peter—he'd always outdo me
In drinking and smoking; in fucking—in winning.
A champ of a wrestler—the king of his high school
With motorbike charm and the guitar to match, he
Ignored me for years—I don't blame him for thinning
Our friendship back then, I was fat and a loud fool
Who dreamed in the daylight of searchlights in Berlin
Where dreamers of freedom were shot—they were fleeing.
While Peter discovered the pleasures of poppy,
I pleasured myself with my books as a shut-in.
His brother discovered the body—he's screaming,
And screaming I've heard since that day. I won't copy
The mode of his sorrow. I've learned to stop crying—
I've learned to be fearful: the brave ones die trying.

Horror Show [Today's News Poem, May 1, 2010]
“The incident in New York City's Times Square that began with a suspicious vehicle appears to have developed into a real threat from a fire bomb, according to one official account. Part of New York City's Times Square area was evacuated Saturday, May 1, after a suspicious vehicle was found there on fire. All reports indicate the vehicle contained gasoline, propane and possibly gun powder. Incindiary devices are not explosive devices, but are lethal.”
– Richard Esposito, ABC News, May 1, 2010

“It's the first time that the character of Krueger, not just his actions, has been legitimately disturbing and that's mainly because of what Bayer and company show us of pre-burn Freddy. You're not quite sure if he's just a soft-spoken, simpleton gardener with innocent intentions or whether that southern twang, sweet tea approach is Freddy Krueger's actual mask. That's not just creepy, that's bothersome. Those are real-world issues.”

A Yankee Doodle murder fest
For those who fear explosive vests.
A trip to Wal-Mart gets it done
Just strip the powder from your gun's
Supply of ammo; pump some gas
And steal a car—you're there with class.
The movie ends on climax notes.
We never see the hero's motes
Of sorrow poison him with guilt
Nor see his righteous anger wilt
Beyond the credits—nor his shame
As friends despise the killer's name.
Entrepreneurs have always been
America's domain of win.
We grew the market for the car,
Computers—why not also star
As action heroes in a war?
For what's a little righteous gore,
When Ted Kaczynski earned his fame
By bombing labs, to much acclaim?
Who makes a movie starring shlubs
Who drive the cabs or tend the pubs?
The start-up costs are dear it's true;
But movie stars must first debut.

Last Words of a False Prophet Before Her Beheading [News Poem, April 30, 2010]
Last Words of a False Prophet Before Her Beheading [News Poem, April 30, 2010]
“You ask I make my choice? It's made.
I choose to separate myself
From both the worshipers of blades,
And ones who use a book on shelf
To choose their mode of bigotry;
To justify their cruelty,
To please their Gods or ancestry.
I'll swear at oaths of fealty
Before I let you compromise
The oath I made to humankind.
You cowards! All of you surmise
That killing me destroys my mind
And silences the truth. It's true
You'll ask my skull for pithy barbs—
Until the swords are rusted through.
With ash and sackcloth as your garb—
You'll still recall the atheist
Who questioned why you must persist
In elevating solipsists
Who don't believe that God exists—“

"Honor killings," or crimes carried out against women seen to have tainted the family's name, are not uncommon in mainly Muslim Turkey, particularly in poor and rural areas.
The European Union, which Turkey has applied to join, has repeatedly urged Ankara to take a tougher stance against such crimes.

Another Toylit Scoop! Beating Krugman by 3 years! Here's the reprint + comments
So Paul Krugman (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/30/opinion/30krugman.html?hp) spots now what I saw three years ago: the dollar trap. I noticed the increasing volatility in currency exchanges and the Chinese currency strategy and started examining contingency scenarios. I think this article implies a financial meltdown, but it totally missed the size and scope of it. Still, given the events over the last few years and given how extremely WRONG the pundits were, I think the article's prescient. I didn't see the scope of the meltdown, but I did catch the long term trend-dynamic before anyone else did. Yee haw.
Mark Ames didn't like the direction my analysis was going in at the time, because it was too self-congratulatory. I'm glad he stopped me, because I was going to write a bunch of articles about how the USA won't suffer during a financial meltdown. Ha! Well, not all the trends are bad here. US-Chinese competition is going to splatter European industries. Cheap American shit vs Cheap Chinese shit: whose cuisine will reign supreme?
ps: China's signs of inflation are starting to become obvious.
China: Bow To Uncle Sam!

SAN FRANCISCO - China is on the brink of a financial meltdown. Ok, call me a crackhead. Feel better? Now let's talk facts. According to the World Bank, China's profits on capital invested is climbing, not dropping, as an overheating economy might suggest. Whether one is counting on official figures or reverse engineered figures, China's total investment rate is still somewhere between 37%-45%; significantly higher than the 21% average investment rate internationally. When combined with a 5 year Incremental-Capital-Output-Ratio (ICOR) around 4.5% (the % of GDP needed to boost GDP growth by 1%), this seems to paint the picture of a China on the rise: until one looks at US productivity figures.
Graphing durable productivity growth in the US economy over the last four years reveals the US has averaged a huge 6.09% durable productivity growth per year. This has resulted in drops in Unit Labor Cost (labor cost per unit of GDP) significantly during that period: 1.11% per year on average, even as GDP has grown during this period. In fact, durable productivity growth has exceeded GDP growth since the 2000-2001 slowdown: productivity in durable manufacturing is rising so fast, it's making US labor costs even more competitive than they already are. What this means is that the advantage that low labor cost economies have over the US is rapidly shrinking in America's favor.
Now, let's complicate the picture: China is the world's second biggest holder of US Treasury securities, and 70% of its trillion foreign reserves is in US dollars. The popular economic argument is that this huge debt balance is dangerous for the US, because a trade deficit siphons wealth out of the debtor's economy and into the creditor's economy. Eventually, the value of dollar-denominated assets should drop, because US wealth should be getting depleted. This premise is flawed.
A trade deficit can be good if the economy with the deficit is creating more wealth than the cost of imports. The University of Michigan and Florida International University study of US entrepreneurial activity showed it hit an all time high in 2005 with 23 million starting, or managing a business under four years old, and The Economist recently claimed that the US has twice as many entrepreneurs as the EU. This suggests that the US is using the imports of cars and computers (components that make up the US trade deficit) to build businesses.
In economic terms, the value of the goods imported exceeds their cost. The result? Hyper-productivity growth across durable producers and a growth in efficient, small manufacturers. The trade deficit is irrelevant if the imported goods are worth more than they cost. A laptop made in China is more valuable in the US because of the business climate here. Likewise a truck, or most anything else. Who ever heard of the Chinese protecting intellectual property rights? If every jackass with a bank account, connections, or factory is ripping off small business ideas, the value innovator isn't going to get paid for his work and isn't going to add his best use to the economy. Combine this with guangxi networks and party officials demanding bribes, it's no surprise that China's labor costs are rising. There's less incentive to add value if there's a good chance it's going to get stolen - hence low worker productivity growth. This works so long as there are cheap labor inputs, but as labor gets scarcer, wages climb. These factors eat away at China's long term productivity growth and are examples of the way a manufacture's value increases once it crosses the border.
What about the risk of China dumping its dollar assets for other assets? If China does this, it will increase supply of dollar assets and also reduce the demand for dollar assets (since it is a major importer of dollars). A devaluation in the dollar would result in a devaluation of the rest of the dollar reserves China has and put a major dent in its total reserves. It would also make Chinese exports to the US more expensive, and imports from the US cheaper. Dollar inflation would increase and that would hurt everything in the US economy: or would it?
A rapid drop in the Dollar versus the Yuan would result in almost immediate, and major import substitution by US producers. Until inflation is tamped out, it will continue to drop the cost of US manufactures compared to foreign manufacturers. It would be a deathblow to European industries, which would need to respond with even more protectionism. Airbus is already on the ropes - a 20% drop in the dollar would see almost every plane order in the world for the next five years going to Boeing. Multiply this across every industry where the EU is barely competitive with the rest of the world and you can see that a disaster is brewing, not for the US, but for Europe. China would lose its target market for exports and its domestic consumption won't be able to make up for the difference.
China's current investment rate is predicated upon the presumption that for the near future, China will remain one of the world's most competitive manufacturers. With profits where they are right now, it's easy to say that China hasn't over-invested. Still, the trends are telling. Competition with slave economies has unlocked productivity growth in the US economy previously unseen. So long as US durable productivity growth is greater than its GDP growth, the US will continue to get more competitive vs. low-cost producers. Therefore, financing US debt, rather than being a sign of long-term Chinese strength, is a sign of its long term weakness. China's locked itself into a strategy it can't escape. At this rate, the US is going to eradicate the competitive advantage of low labor cost producers in a decade or two. But if China tries to stop subsidizing US trade, it hurts Chinese manufacturers and benefits US manufacturers.
It's just another example of how things aren't always what they appear to be in the international financial game. A strategy can be good in the short term, but lock you into a problem you can't escape. Sorry, China!
