The Proper Way To Fire People [Today's News Poem by Khakjaan Wessington, June 8, 2012]

The Proper Way To Fire People [Today's News Poem by Khakjaan Wessington, June 8, 2012]

How to fire people?
Focus a prism of stolen light.
Fahrenheit eight forty two
Burns hair, gasoline, paper.
That number, like all numbers
Came from authority:
The Internet. It is electrons
And anything hot and in motion
Is Fire, so The Internet is Fire.
The Internet is made of stolen fossils—
Just like The Museums, Freeways, Free Trade—
Therefore when I fire people
I first take their planet and pump it dry
And coat its surface with the ocher of my profits.
Only then shall I obtain escape velocity
And from afar, admire the sight
Of stars and nebulae, and Earth
Ablaze and cloudy with everyone I've fired.

The day that I did those layoffs, there was an oddly cheerful atmosphere in the shop.”
Paul Downs, The New York Times, June 4, 2012, 7:00 am

The barbarians were by this time usually corporations, often syndicates from St. Louis, Chicago and other cities,”
—CHRISTOPHER GRAY, The New York Times, Published: June 7, 2012

The earth could be nearing a point at which sweeping environmental changes, possibly including mass extinctions, would undermine human welfare, 22 prominent biologists and ecologists warned on Wednesday.”
—JUSTIN GILLIS, The New York Times, June 6, 2012, 2:39 pm

Innocence Attritted [Today's News Poem, April 4, 2011]

Innocence Attritted [Today's News Poem, April 4, 2011]

There's so much freshness, so much more innocence to shed.
The tide for example withdraws all the sand,
Draws all the hermit crabs, basks in the droppings of pelicans.
Fish fake the song at the crest of the swell—
Throbbing; a heart that pumps gills and ocean.
Welcome the edges of food-chain and welcome the
song of ablation,
the pockmarks of moon;
welcome births with one's mouth
and silvery slivers from eggs in the moonlight—
innocent still, for a moment at least.

"The federal government's chief climate adviser Professor Ross Garnaut believes nuclear power still has a vital role to play in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, despite the crisis at Japan's Fukushima plant."

Stripping While Burning [#twitterfoundpoem, August 23, 2010]

Stripping While Burning [#twitterfoundpoem, August 23, 2010]
Tweets+Edits=#twitterfoundpoem

After hours of fiddling
Y SHOULD I GIVE UH FUCK?
i am fiddling!
fiddling in the strip club!
fiddling in my room!
fiddling in Greece...
I seem to have survived tonights fiddling
with only minor damage.
So it's more of a minor annoyance than an emergency
that has nothing to do with my major:
Fiddling While the US Economy Burns.
Not done yet, but the rest is minor tinkering.
waiting on someone to open
your heart again?
you can squirt your breast milk at folks in the strip club!
I'm fiddling While
it Burns and we burn it down
and you're dancing!
I gotchaa one day wen we burn it down...
Y SHOULD I GIVE UH FUCK?
Working on it now!

Eyes for Ra [Twitter Found Poem, June 21, 2010]

Eyes for Ra [Twitter Found Poem, June 21, 2010]
Tweets+Edits=#twitterfoundpoem

In honor and to appease the sun god Ra
I offer MY EYES.
I plan to stare at the sun.

that planet Earth turns... sloooooowlyy...
the most annoying planet.
I went to a planet that had people!!!
Why's it always painful people?
Why can't I BURN MY EYES In Peace?

Why are all these ugly pagans
trying to honor and appease the sun god Ra?
I don't like to SEE #Wiccan VAGINA PLZZZ.
I'm a fan of pagans who burn their own Stonehenge
to the ground after winning a summer solstice.

Put your chunky #Pagan penis away.
the sun god Ra doesn't want to SEE it.
the sun god Ra wants you to stare at the sun.
ha ha! Feel the burn!
burn the city to the ground
that planet Earth turns... sloooooowlyy...
there is no stronger god than Ra
and blindness is his prophet.

Centrifugal Force [Today's News Poem, May 23, 2010]

Centrifugal Force [Today's News Poem, May 23, 2010]

Whose excess of faith is intact?
Whose coffee in paper is cupped
In fists that can cradle a fact
And comfort and never erupt

With more than a protest. We sip
And gushers of plenty fulfill
Demands on the harnessed. We grip
The planet so tightly we spill

Some drops in to space—where it's gas
That dissipates—following prayers
From earlier eras and pass
Away from our grip. And our heirs

Already are losing their bond
With ancestors flying away—
I'm drifting to edges beyond
The limits. I'm watching them spray

The surface of earth. They ignite
The clouds and the birds all collapse.
The oceans are burning new light
Like stars or the sun or perhaps

Like embers of paper in heaps
They lit with our excrement, books.
And farther we drift as they reap—
I think— the whole orb. There it cooks.

“Saying BP has "from day one, frankly not fulfilled the mission it was supposed to fulfill," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar expressed frustration Sunday with the delay in stopping an underwater oil gusher 33 days after an oil rig exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico.
"I have no question that BP is throwing everything at the problem," Salazar said. "Do I have confidence that they know exactly what they're doing? No."
But he and other federal officials likened the task to an "Apollo 13" mission.”
