The Proper Way To Fire People [Today's News Poem by Khakjaan Wessington, June 8, 2012]

The Proper Way To Fire People [Today's News Poem by Khakjaan Wessington, June 8, 2012]

How to fire people?
Focus a prism of stolen light.
Fahrenheit eight forty two
Burns hair, gasoline, paper.
That number, like all numbers
Came from authority:
The Internet. It is electrons
And anything hot and in motion
Is Fire, so The Internet is Fire.
The Internet is made of stolen fossils—
Just like The Museums, Freeways, Free Trade—
Therefore when I fire people
I first take their planet and pump it dry
And coat its surface with the ocher of my profits.
Only then shall I obtain escape velocity
And from afar, admire the sight
Of stars and nebulae, and Earth
Ablaze and cloudy with everyone I've fired.

The day that I did those layoffs, there was an oddly cheerful atmosphere in the shop.”
Paul Downs, The New York Times, June 4, 2012, 7:00 am

The barbarians were by this time usually corporations, often syndicates from St. Louis, Chicago and other cities,”
—CHRISTOPHER GRAY, The New York Times, Published: June 7, 2012

The earth could be nearing a point at which sweeping environmental changes, possibly including mass extinctions, would undermine human welfare, 22 prominent biologists and ecologists warned on Wednesday.”

Taking You With Me [Today's News Poem, March 23, 2011]

Taking You With Me [Today's News Poem, March 23, 2011]

Think of all those dollars saved,
While coasting on an outbound wave:
Farallon Islands your grave,

The seagulls laugh and pitch their wings
Over smoke the city sings.
Release the cremains in charred strings.

Smoking dollar, hear me holler.
Prise my coffin, drop the money
Off; I'll take it with me
Leaving ash behind.

"San Francisco firefighters are paid 18.3 percent above market compared to other fire departments in the region. And when you break it down by hourly pay, they're paid 34 percent over market."

Combustible Angst [Today's News Poem, December 4, 2010]

Combustible Angst [Today's News Poem, December 4, 2010]

Telegram sent from inferno to office.
Blaze from the circuitry: lines on a graph.
Pick up the phone—it's for you—it's a scorcher.
Burn off your sideburns, your stubble; your face
Spared from the temperature, spared by the distance.
Graph? Well, it's curved like the universe; graphed
Almost balloon-like, so call it inflation.
Excess delivers itself where unneeded.
Likewise, attention may wander the airwaves
Searching for call-signs where nothing survives
Longer than whimsy; than carbon in blaze.

"After more than three days, Israel’s worst-ever fire still raging; Five million trees destroyed across 50,000 dunams of land; World’s biggest fire-fighting plane joining the battle."

Cradle of Wonders [Today's News Poem, November 15, 2010]

Cradle of Wonders [Today's News Poem, November 15, 2010]

Sleep through the ashes of mother and father.
Cradle your skull on a pillow of tinder.
Grip your giraffe as the world sets its wonder
Blazing—amazing how scenes seem to vanish.
Faces adored you, now flames are admiring
Ignorance. Torches can send you to dreaming,
Sending you mobiles of smoke as you wonder
How did a world so pronounced with surprises
Conjure a mist in your bedroom. Such splendor!

"A fire at a high-rise building in Shanghai killed at least 42 people and injured more than 90 on Monday, China's state media said."

Engineering a Demon [Today's News Poem, September 10, 2010]

Engineering a Demon [Today's News Poem, September 10, 2010]

Thrusting the thrashing snakes into the crusting and crashing quakes—
Baked then it's dusted with gunpowder; slaked with bones they busted:
Asphalt transmitted the lies. It's my fault. I'm smitten with skies
Frying the scramble and doing my crying through pipe-rambles.
Under the fortress of bedroom; the thunder shrieks through floor stress.
Tress of the spark from the wires—it will bless us: flames will embark.

“The death toll from the natural gas line explosion that leveled a San Bruno neighborhood grew overnight to four as federal investigators joined the probe into what caused the disaster.”

but after a nasty fire and kneecap shooting incident
traveling to class scares me!!
So you better pimp yo professor
before yo professor pimp you!!

my professor broke my ankle,
set ME on fire...
and then there is the
nasty kneecap shooting incident...
I Almost fainted from the pain uhh...

wish yo bad luck would go away?
pimp yo professor!!
it is the only way.
your friends are gonna change with every situation,
but not yo professor!!
Yo, you change one thing, it changes everything.
You don't have to be a kiss ass,
You don't have to put an order in for street drugs
for yo professor,
You just need set the world on fire.
it is the only way to be sure
You do that assignment
and pimp that professor good!!!!

The Third Nature [Today's News Poem, June 13, 2010]

The Third Nature [Today's News Poem, June 13, 2010]

They're stuck in this canyon of timber. They're waiting,
Like me, for the bus and they're dazzled by flickers
Of gasses so noble they brighten the evening
With gold—like the color of beer from a bottle.
The shards of a day that was lost fill the gutter.
The vapors ascend and combine with the moisture
Of fog on the hill and a figure approaches.
His balance maintained by the sidewalk, his breathing
Is fortified wine and his ear has a diamond
As small as the lamp at the edge of my vision.
He asks me for money. I hold up my transfer
To silence his plea—but he mumbles and rambles:
“Yeah crack's what I hoped for. You saw that. And still you
Are listening. Something tonight on the corner
Has changed me. I saw her—this tranny. She looked like
That Lucy... umm... Liu. And I know what we think and
We do makes the diff'rence in life and it's nothing
To look, but to touch her I'd earn it all back. I'm
A playa' who stepped off the game and I needed
To tell you I'm stuck and I'm hooked on the city.
And never before would I think I would ever
Confess to a man, or a stranger I want her.
I do. It's just... damn... when a man is more woman
Than woman I'll drink to her beautiful nature.”
And later I read of the snakes in the desert;
The hollow ones burst and from steel to the river;
Their contents have mingled with water. Pollution's
Ephemeral: mixed with the salt, in a body
Of desert. The earth isn't poisoned, it slumbers
Inanimate. Life too, is gone in an instant.

“A pipeline carrying mid-grade crude oil to Chevron Corp's 45,000 barrel per day (bpd) Salt Lake City refinery was shut on Saturday after leaking oil into a creek that feeds Utah's Great Salt Lake, said a fire department spokesman on Sunday.”

Game of Deflection [Today's News Poem, June 5, 2010]

Game of Deflection [Today's News Poem, June 5, 2010]

He's searching for something to watch on the channels.
An image of alternate self is displaying—
It's out there—if only he finds the right station.
His mirror in bathroom is smeared, the reflection
Is tarnished with toothpaste and spittle. The windows
Are worse than the monitor: both serve as portals
Of entry for forces with semblances bearing
The will of another. He looks for a program
On mountains and caves—where our ancestors huddle
Together. The flames from their pit are projecting
A sign on the wall and they call it a human.
The rain is the echo they name after heartbeats.
The breeze and its howling, they name for their voices.
The elements smother the heat of combustion—
The end of the game for their endless deflection.

“Bravo isn’t simply guessing that the more exposed and personal aspects of Ms. Frankel’s life will appeal to its audience. The network, which finds and tests stars in much the same way that consumer products companies develop and market shampoos and mascaras, has done its homework. And it is confident that this is exactly what viewers want out of a show starring Ms. Frankel, one of its “Bravolebrities.” Viewers’ opinions, carefully observed and culled on the Web and pinpointed through more traditional market research, tend to dictate which Bravo stars graduate from ensemble reality shows to their own programs. The thinking is that they’ve already been vetted by the Bravo audience and the research team, and that they’ve already built brand awareness — so Bravo is, in marketing terms, just extending its product line. ”

Elements of Attraction [Today's News Poem, May 8, 2010]

Elements of Attraction [Today's News Poem, May 8, 2010]

Awakening Gaia—who slumbers in magma,
Recoiling from birth even now, in the churning
Of iron—intelligence flickers in magnets.
We creep and we fly through the dreams of our hostess.
She's muttering curses. We're misapprehending
The message of burning. The ashes may flutter
And scorch what's not smothered; a gusher in oceans
Ignites on the surface and swims with the currents;
The coal in the seams in the mines is a shadow
Of flames ever spinning and reeling from natal
Exertions. She lusts for the Sun and she pities
Near Luna—it's old and depleted and barren.
The Sun is much finer: alone in the darkness
The system surrounds it, enthralled with attraction.

“Gulf fishery managers are bracing for the arrival of oil gushing from a ruptured undersea wellhead off Louisiana's coast since April 20, when the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig under contract with BP Plc exploded. The blast killed 11 crew members, sank the rig and unleashed a spill that could eclipse the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska.”

“Four hours after an explosion killed at least eight people in Russia's largest coal mine, Raspadskaya, another blast rocked the West Siberian mine, a source in the mine's administration said on Sunday. "The blast took place at about 1:00 a.m. Moscow time," the source said without elaborating. The information is yet to be officially confirmed.”
